Re-Live Waste final online conference

The final Re-Live Waste event will be held online on April 19-20, 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions.

The project, financed by the EU in the framework of the "Interreg MED" 2014/2020 Transnational Programme, focuses on the testing and development of an innovative technology to process animal waste and recover nutrients, to be reused in agriculture, in particular, in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones.

The project is coordinated by the "Nucleo di Ricerca sulla Desertificazione" (NRD) of the University of Sassari and it brings together nine partners from four of the 13 European countries participating in the Programme:

The project has developed three pilot struvite production plants (IT, SP and B&H) and upgraded an existing fourth one (CY). The project has also facilitated the adoption of good practices by private stakeholders involved in the project, and dialogue with policymakers with the publication of original policy guidelines.

During the last three years, and particularly in 2021, many opportunities have been promoted to facilitate cooperation between the actors of the so-called quadruple helix: public bodies, enterprises, research and civil society, including: thematic workshops, political round tables, plant visits. The COVID-19 pandemic saw the partners engaged in experimenting with new ways of involving stakeholders, through online interviews, virtual tours, meetings on platforms such as zoom, teams and gotomeet.

The struvite-based fertilizer produced in the pilot plants has been agronomically tested on two selected varieties: Lactuca sativa L. and Raphanus sativus L. The results of the experimentation are very promising. In addition, environmental and economic analyses were conducted on the pilot activities to assess both the environmental impact of the fertilizer production and the economic sustainability of the investment.

The event will be attended by regional policymakers, representatives of the INTERREG MED Programme, communication and research agencies, newspapers and sister projects dealing with waste management.

The discussion between the partners, who will present the results of the project, and the guests will encourage dialogue in order to outline together possible future scenarios.
